- ItemTHE LECTURERS WITH STRUCTURAL POSITIONS AND THEIR INFLUENCES ON JOB SATISFACTION: THE PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENT AND THE ROLE CONFLICT AS MODERATING VARIABLES (Study of Private Universities In Bandung)(Universitas Widyatama, 2014-02-14) Dianita, Mirna; Apriwandi; Shaleh, KhairulAmong various educational institutions, it has become a common practice for a teacher (educator) to carry out additional managerial duties as they are appointed as structural officials. This condition occurs due to the limited number of human resources available for managerial duties, while lecturerss are considered having the ability to manage and develop education, thus are expected to contribute positively to the educational institution. However, running multiple roles simultaneously lead to a problem in their roles, because these double roles have different tasks and scopes. A structural managerial role that does not match their capabilities, or undesired position, causes enough pressure for many yet it is also often unavoidable. The population in this study consists of educators (permanent lecturers positions) of private university (PTS) in Bandung, as much as 38 respondents. The analysis model used is regression analysis. The residual analysis tests the effect of a deviation from the model built. To test the hypothesis is to use multiple regression with the shape of overall interaction. Based on the research, lecturerss who also maintain structural positions relate negatively with professional commitments despite the lecturers’s job satisfaction increase after receiving additional tasks. The results of this study also showed that organizational commitment effects job satisfaction and that there is a direct influence between Professional Commitment towards Job Satisfaction.
- ItemTHE ROLE OF STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING TO PREPARE ACTIVELY INDEPENDENT LEARNERS: A BRIDGING PROGRAM CASE STUDY IN THE ECONOMICS FACULTY OF THE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF INDONESIA(Widyatama International Seminar, 2014-02-14) Setiawati, Trias; Zuhriyah; Ridwan; Hasyim, Fuad; Prihantoro, Agung; Sarkawi, AhmadThe objective of the research is to examine the process of student-centered learning (SCL) approach as a step for improving the quality in the Bridging Program (BP) at the Economics Faculty of Islamic University of Indonesia. The BP is held in 100 minutes of four meetings a week for the freshmen at the Departments of Management and Economics, designed to bridge the gap between student’s life in secondary schools and the higher learning education, and to facilitate students in developing their soft skills being active independent learners. Examination is focused on primary data obtained form documentation, interview, observation and focus group discussion (FGD) involving students and lecturers of the Program, using qualitative method that is a case study. The results show that (1) the SCL approach employing a number of learning tools such as computer, projector, colorful paper and marker, bottle, water and so onhas significant impact in various learning activities such as small group and class discussion, debate, role play, simulation, and project. The approach also encourages students to be more active and joyful to learn as compared to another approach namely teacher-centered learning approach. (2) As a consequence of the approach use, the class facilities such as chairs, sound systems, computers facilities are unable to accommodate the demand for the students who are more active, whereas the classes are unable to be conducted optimally due to lecturer-to-student ratio which is very small. (3) The SCL approach provides more satisfaction to the students as they can express their desire, capacity and ability to analyze the subject.

- ItemREDEFINING “QUALITY” IN HIGHER EDUCATION: AN ANALYSIS ON THE CHALLENGES TO HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS BY THE POLICY REFORMS IMPLEMENTED BY THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT(Widyatama International Seminar, 2014-02-14) Bustamante, Christian Bryan S.Quality assurance is a major concern of academic institutions across the globe.1 This increasing and growing concern on quality assurance is caused by the significant changes in the global environment that have direct impact on the role, functions, shape and mode of operation of tertiary educational institutions and systems.2 The World Bank identifies (1) the emergence of worldwide labor market, (2) increasing importance of knowledge as a driver of growth, and (3) the information and communication revolution among the global phenomena that are continuously shaping and changing tertiary education.3 Another significant change in the global environment that directly influenced quality assurance is the growth of crossborder higher education.4 Quality assurance is critical in cross-border higher education because of the following reasons: (1) to protect students and other stakeholders from low-quality provision and disreputable providers; and (2) to encourage the development of quality cross-border education that meets human, social economic and cultural needs.5 The emergence of worldwide labor market and the growth of cross-border higher education give higher education no option but to improve the delivery of quality educational services and to implement quality assurance systems.
- ItemHARNESSING UNIVERSITY-INDUSTRY COLLABORATION THROUGH LIFELONG LEARNING EDUCATION(Widyatama International Seminar, 2014-02-14) Stanley Yap; Chng L.P.Strategic alliances play a major part in the strategic set up of many firms. While this mode toconduct economic activity has received increasing attention in the strategic management literature, our understanding is still limited. This paper aims to explore the strategic alliance between university-industry relationships by focusing on the experience of Open University Malaysia and its lifelong learning strategic alliances. This paper reviews literatures on allianceformation and management, governance of alliances and dynamics of alliances. The advantages and the challenges of interorganisational collaboration are discussed. Thestrategic alliances between organisations may reduce resource redundancy and increase effective use of state fiscal, physical, and personnel resources. More often than not, policymakers are interested in using strategic alliances to leverage change that is not attainable when institutions act alone, especially when the desired changes span across public sector institutions or across educational sectors. The managerial advices suggested by the current literatures are revisited in order to access the groundwork to address alliance challenges and enhance their alliance capability. This paper proposes that with an increasing number of alliances firms are increasingly forced to develop consistent practices within alliances and to coordinate between these alliances. In the quest to develop a knowledge based society, alliances between university and industry are more pertinent as universities need to produce the pool of talents with a set of specific skills required by specific industries. Open University Malaysia has forged strategic alliances with many organisations, locally and abroad. Open University Malaysia through its Institute of Professional Development has forged with several national bodies; Master Builders Association of Malaysia, Building Management Association of Malaysia, Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association, Malaysian Institute of Human Resources Management, Institute of Public Relations Malaysia, Malaysian Institute of Management, Malaysian Financial Planning Council and the Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents. These national bodies are holding a pivotal role in shaping the industries in Malaysia. Open University Malaysia is seen as a trendsetter in the field of education, having brought to mainstream attention the viability and benefits of the open or distant learning approach. By harnessing this approach Open University Malaysia has helped the scores of working individuals to upgrade their qualifications as its mission is to make education accessible for all.
- ItemAN ACADEMIC PERSPECTIVE OF ASSESSMENT QUESTION BANK(Widyatama International Seminar, 2014-02-14) Fadzil, Mansor; Ali, Siti Aishah Hashim; Mahadzir, Marlina; Hassan, M. FauziThere are several electronic assessment systems being used in institutions of higher education (HE), especially in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions. Some of these institutions built their assessment system into their institution’s Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Most of these assessment systems are for general purposes where assessment questions are in the form of simple multiple choice question (MCQ) or short-answer questions. In practice, these types of assessment questions do not match many of the current learning requirements and learning outcomes. The concept of an assessment question bank that can be used by academics to share assessment content within or across an institution is not new, but the advancement of technology and technical developments now have made such a repository realizable than ever before. A question bank is now a specialized repository that can be accessed via a web interface for platform independence. The use of technology in developing the question bank provides much relief for the chores associated with preparing assessments, which in turn enhances the quality of the questions and improves the quality of the assessments. This paper presents the experience of Open University Malaysia (OUM) in developing its own Question Bank (QBank). This QBank system is designed to help the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who need to develop, classify and store their assessment such as MCQ and essay-type exam questions. This software is integrated with the OUM’s Virtual Learning Environments (myVLE) in order to allow easier and wider access to the SMEs and faculty.
- ItemLEXICAL APPROACH: A WAY TO AUGMENT STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY(Universitas Widyatama, 2014-02-14) Supri, Ida Zuraida“I think his dream job is different with mine”. In classrooms, we often hear students incorrectly use choice of words. The word ‘different’ should go with the word ‘from’ instead of with the word ‘with’. This occurs because vocabulary is taught in traditional way where it is understood as a stock of individual words with fixed meanings. As a result, students tend to guess randomly when they need to combine words. Michael Lewis’s Lexical Approach argues that language consists of chunks that produce coherent texts when they are combined (Lewis: 1997). The basic concept on which this approach supports is the idea that an important part of learning a language encompass being able to understand and produce lexical phrases as chunks. Students are thought to be able to perceive patterns of language or grammar as well as have meaningful set uses of words at their disposal when they are taught in this way. This paper will elaborate on 1. types of lexis, 2) activities to develop learners' knowledge of lexical chains, and 3) students’ responses to the use of lexical approach.

- ItemRELATIONSHIP-BASED STUDENT LOYAL MODEL IN AN OPEN DISTANCE LEARNING INSTITUTION(Universitas Widyatama, 2014-02-14) Latif, Latifah Abdol; Bahroom, RamliThe task of retaining students in an open and distance learning (ODL) higher education institutions (HEIs) represents a huge challenge. This has led to extensive research in this area. Several retention models have been explored and many intervention efforts have been attempted. The relationship quality-based student loyalty (RQSL) model, borrowed from marketing has been added to the repertoire of research approaches. It has been found to be appealing and well-suited for adoption by HEIs based on the premise that student relationship is the cornerstone of student loyalty. This study attempts to explore the use of this approach in a private ODL institution. A cross-sectional survey involving 2,300 student respondents was adopted and administered in September 2011. The results indicate that service quality, emotional commitment and students’ trust had positive impact on student loyalty. The step-wise regression analysis showed that the highest impact on student loyalty is due to emotional commitment, followed by service quality and trust. However, in terms of the total impact on student loyalty, the highest is due to service quality, followed by emotional commitment and trust. Based on the findings of this preliminary study, the institution can adopt three strategic approaches; service quality-based, an emotional commitment-based, and trust-based initiatives to increase the level of student loyalty. It is noted that student loyalty is not limited to the time that the student spends in the university; the advantages of student loyalty are probably greatest after they have graduated where they could contribute positively via financial support, word-ofmouth promotion and through some form of cooperation to the institution

The workforce needs to polish their professional skills in addition to its current technical skills which can be developed through continuous education. Only then, they will have a hollistic development of both professional and technical skills which enable them to help increase productivity. The changing demands of the markets put pressure on the workforce to learn new skills at an accelerating pace.
