Sidharta Soegijo)(Universitas Negeri Semarang Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, 2012-12-18) Supriyadi, Jajang; Sabana, Setiawan; Adriati, IraAbstract In the development of Indonesian contemporary art during 1970, the issue of identity shifted somewhat into a special position; that being a shift from the perception of "national identity" that was political in nature to the perception of a cultural identity that was based in the background of the culture. The cultural tradition, especially in the perception of the cultures outside the West, has evolved into an important part in creating the cultural awareness and identity. A number of tendencies in aesthetic, styles, expressions, and thoughts behind it cannot be measured by the standard of the world’s contemporary art. All the tendencies, besides following the pattern of modernization, are also rooted in various local realities. This development shows the process of adaptation containing interpretation. This research is a reflection study to the works of art and thought of G. Sidharta Soegijo as a founder of Indonesian contemporary art. As type of interdisciplinary research with the main method of art history, the procedure begins with focused to collect of primary data sources and secondary form of visual and written data of G. Sidharta Soegijo as sampling choosen. The next stage is to conduct a critique of the data source to obtain data that have high credibility. Furthermore, the data that have been selected and analyzed with semiotic approach hermeneutics. The results of analysis of written and visual data longer then interpreted by considering the context or the motives behind the production of works of art. The next stage is the stage of historiography or writing the results of research focused on cultural identity that is reflected from the works of art, and the socio-cultural context in Indonesia underlying the changes in the manner and form of works of art. The results showed consciousness that G. Sidharta Soegijo explores the gradual blurring of the traditional and modern boundary and suggests infinite possibilities of life as cultural identity is reflected. His works is an endeavour to eliminate the disparity between the traditional and modern life, it is also a manifestation of the artist’s attempt to balance his Western training with his cultural background as a resolve and reflected in contemporary art practices in Indonesia.
