Abstract
The global financial crisis in 2008 has lowered the financial performance some of industries in Indonesia. The impact influenced the banking sector. Report on December 2008 showed that the operating profit of the banking sector decreased 30.6%. The decline in operating profit will decrease the net income (the earnings after tax), and in the long run it will lowering the performance of banking industry if this is not addressed immediately. One of the way to raise revenue from bank's operating income is to increase the interest income (from lending) and fee-based income (non interest based income obtain from fees and commissions, foreign exchange transactions, and other income). This research analyzed and investigated the effect of interest income and fee based income on the earnings after tax. The investigations employed the regression method and test the result with the classical assumption test and using purposive sampling method to obtain the data of 18 banks listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange (Bursa Efek Indonesia or BEI) for 2005-2009 periods. The findings showed that the interest income, fee based income, and earnings after tax showed fluctuated moves. Both of the interest income and fee based income variables simultaneously showed a significant effect to the earnings after tax of 18 banks, and individually both of the interest income and fee based income variables have positive and significant effect to the earnings after tax of 18 banks during the investigation.
