- ItemTHE ENGLISH STUDENT'S DIFFICULTIES IN TRANSLATING ENGLISH NEWS HEADLINES(The 2nd UAD TEFL International Conference, University of Ahmad Dahlan Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 2012-10-13) HendarA newspaper headline is often the only thing that readers read in a newspaper, or at least, it is t,e first thing that everyone notices in a newspaper. It serves as a guide for the reader that helps decide whether to continue on reading the whole report or to skip onto another one. According to LaRocque (2003: 10), a good headline persuades the readers to stop and dedicate their time to reading the story. Such a headline catches reader's interest as well as it captures the essence of the story. That is why the style of news headline writings has its own features different from other types of text. Obviously it is not only a matter of lexical , and rhetorical features, but also grammatical features. Many English students still, therefore, get difficulty translating and grasping the written massages of the English news headlines. This small research tries to find out the problems faced by English students in understanding and translating the English news headlines especially found in Jakarta Post Newspaper as well asto analyze some typical linguistic features found in Jakarta Post headlines. The results of thisresearch show that some typical linguistic features found in Jakarta Post headlines that the English students do not know, among others, are the absence of the verb 'be', or articles, using infinitives to refer to the future tense, simple tenses instead of progressive or perfect forms as a result, they surely cannot get and translate the conveyed messages of the English news headlines as a source language into target language well.
- ItemIMPLEMENTING NUNAN’S AUTONOMOUS LANGUAGE LEARNING MODEL (NALLM) TO EFL STUDENTS OF WIDYATAMA UNIVERSITY(Conference On Professional Development In Education (PDE2014), Widyatama University Indonesia, Open University Indonesia and Open University Malaysia, 2014-06-11) HendarIn Indonesia, the efforts to have better outcome in language teaching have been carried out through years starting from the implementation of audio-lingual method to communicative approach, and from grammar to language function orientations; on the other hand, students have studied English for at least 9 years from the third grade of elementary school to the second years of higher education. yet the results still seem unsatisfactory as they are not able to communicate in English well. Some linguists think that language is too complex and varied for students to master if they are only limited by learning time in a classroom. Therefore, in this information and technology era, language teachers need to try to implement the way of teaching - learner autonomy - especially in higher education due to the fact that all language teachers actually have the same wish in that they want their students to become autonomous learners who have ability to take responsibility for their own learning. The autonomous learning is seen as the result of students’ own self-initiated interaction with the world and who takes a (pro-) active role in the learning process, generating ideas and availing themselves of learning opportunities, rather than simply reacting to various stimuli of the teacher. In fact, it is definitely not an easy matter as the language teacher should make their students have ability to set learning goals, monitor the learning process, and carry out self-evaluation, besides attitude to self-directed learning is frequently conditioned by educational culture in which students have studied or are studying. This paper tries to elaborate on 1) the implementation of Nunan’s Autonomous Language Learning Model (NALLM) to the students of Widyatama University taking Academic English, 2) some difficulties or barriers the teachers and the academic English students have in implementing autonomous language learning system, and 3) pedagogical implication of those two for setting better teaching learning process .
- ItemIMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ BUSINESS ENGLISH COMMUNICATION AND INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE THROUGH ROLE PLAYING AND SIMULATION(International Conference on Language, Literature and Cultural Studies, Burapha University, Faculty of Language, 2013-08-22) Hendar; ChairiawatyLiving in a global village needs an ability not only to communicate or to exchange information by using global languages such as English, but also to know other cultures as we get used to getting into contact with other people from culture other than our own.Intercultural understanding simply refers to the basic ability of people to correctly recognize, interpret, and react to other people, incidences or situations that are open to misunderstanding due to different cultural background meaning that they have different life, vision, religion, ethics, norms, laws, education system etc.Dealing with English language teaching especially for the learners of business communication, it has been widely recognized that they need not just knowledge and skill in the grammar of the target language but also the ability to use the target language in socially and culturally appropriate ways.Classroom speaking activities that can be effectively used to get the goals mentioned are simulation and role-playing as the students ‘stimulate’ a real-life encounter such as a business meeting as if they were doing so in the real world, either as themselves or taking on the role of a character culturally different themselves(Harmer, 2001: 274) and when applied in the classroom, they are proven effective. This paper, therefore, tries to elaborate how to master both English as a means of global communication in different settings and intercultural communication understanding to avoid misunderstanding in the global world for the students of Business Communication by means of role playing and simulation in the classroom.
